Heads up, there's a new vampire movie in town – and it's one you should be paying attention to. 'Vampire Academy' is beginning to open worldwide, and if you aren't one of the millions that have been hooked on the book series since 2008 (Um, what have you been doing?) then there are a few things you need to know before you go traipsing into the theater with your popcorn and diet soda. You could try to get through all five books before then, but if you're going to have trouble cramming that in between homework and other mortal obligations, we've compiled a cheat sheet so you're in the know.
Know The Vocabulary:
In the world of St. Vladimir's Academy we may be dealing with vampires but that doesn't mean that everyone is created equally. You'll need to know who is who to decide what side you're on.
Moroi are full-blooded vampires. They have mystical powers usually aligned with one of the elements like water or fire. They are often seen as having supernatural beauty and need to feed on blood to survive. Their bites have endorphins that can sometimes make their feeders addicted to the bite.
Dhampir are half-human/half-Moroi and are raised to be guardians for the Moroi. They have super-fast reflexes and agility, which makes them naturally good protectors and hunters.
Strigoi are why the Moroi need protecting. They are immortal but have lost all sense of moral center – so they cannot walk on holy grounds or go into sunlight. Anyone can be forced into becoming a Strigoi but only Moroi can choose to join them by forcefully killing someone while feeding on them. Strigoi live on a diet of Moroi blood, which is why it is so important for Dhampir to protect them – because if all of the Moroi are killed off it will mean the extinction of Dhampir as well.
Got that? Great, now let's see who we are dealing with.
Know The Players:
Rosemarie Hathaway is your narrator, heroine and overall badass leading you through this crazy ride – but most everyone calls her Rose. Played by Zoey Deutch ('Beautiful Creatures', 'Switched at Birth'), Rose is a Dhampir which means she is in charge of protecting her best friend Lissa – or Princess Vasilisa Dragomir, if you want to get formal about it. She's the gorgeous blonde (Lucy Fry) attached to Rose's hip and kind of what you dream of being when you grow up.
Being the last of a royal family doesn't just come with a crown, Lissa can also bring the dead back to life, use compulsion and spirit magic. This comes in handy when you and your best friend run away from your super natural high school and then get brought back because you're in immortal danger.
They also come in handy for seducing boys, like newcomer Dominic Sherwood, who plays the sarcastic and brooding Christian Ozera. Christian's parents volunteered to go to become Strigoi so you always kind of wonder if he's all the way good or bad. And yes ladies, that British accent is totally real.
Are mixed up bad boy teenagers not really your deal? Do you prefer even darker, super tall older men? Apparently so does Rose because she's got a major thing for her teacher/trainor Dimitri Belikov. Maybe it's the forbidden romance of dating your teacher and fellow guardian or maybe it's because Danila Kozlovsky knows how to rock shoulder-length hair. Again, accent is totally real, so start brushing up on your Russian.
Okay, have you chosen what side you're on? Or who's your fave? Great, then you're ready to enroll at St. Vladimir's Academy. And don't worry – this is one school where it's okay to suck.
