TeenVogue Gets To Talk With Zoey Deutch about Vampire Academy

Zoey Deutch Makes a Really Good Case About Why You Should See 'Vampire Academy' on Valentine's Day

Reason number one? Because it's awesome.

Vampire Academy comes out on Valentine's Day, which is great, because Valentine's Day isn't always awesome and this year it absolutely, 100%, without a doubt will be.But while you're kicking back in the movie theater nibbling on that heart-shaped box of chocolates and watching a big-screen adaptation you've been looking forward to since the very day it was announced, said movie's star, Zoey Deutch will, well, not be. Her grand plans for February 14th? "I'll be shaking in my boots waiting to hear how the movie goes. But you know, most people don't look forward to Valentine's Day anyway, so it's fine."

Zoey has no reason to be nervous about the world's reaction to her highly-anticipated flick. Vampire Academy, which is basically Twilight meets Harry Potter meets Mean Girls, is from the screenwriter behind Heathers, aka the single best high school flick of the eighties. Plus, the YA series it's based on has been wiiiiildly successful (like millions-upon-millions-of-copies-sold successful). Oh, and? There's been a big vampire-sized hole in our hearts since Bella and Edward faded from our lives, and this is just the movie to fill it.

Zoey, who's every bit as outspoken and generally awesome as the heroine she plays, is clearly proud to take on such an iconic role. (Seriously, anyone who has read the book adores the character—and anyone who hasn't read the book should do so immediately.) "She's a badass, she knows how to fight, and she stands up for herself," Zoey says of Rose Hathaway. "But she's also a remarkably loyal best friend, and I respect her so much for that. I love that she uses her humor as a means of survival. She knows who she is, and isn't afraid to show it."
IRL, the 19-year-old actress is who she is, too, but that doesn't mean she's not without her insecurities. "Growing up, I was an attention wh*re, being the little sibling and all, but now that I'm an actress, I can't deal with attention," she confides. "I get really nervous when people are like, 'I saw you in a trailer! I saw you on TV!' Genuinely, my cheeks get red." Another thing that separates her from her vampire alter-ego? The ability to blush.
So grab your girls, buy your movie tickets, and make the most of the holiday—but just don't expect to run into her at the theater.

Teen talks with Zoey Deutch: 10 Secrets we Need to Know About Zoey

1. She Fangirls Over…Anchorman?!

When we asked what she fangirls over, she said, "It’s not YA, but Anchorman. I am a very, very avid Anchorman fan. I’m just putting it out into the universe," adding, "I was in Atlanta for some reason, and they were filming it there and I almost tried to sneak onto the set. And someone had to tell me that was a bad idea. I wanted to, but I didn’t want to get arrested. I should have tried to sneak on. I wanted that story. But it didn’t happen. Maybe if they make a third I’ll figure out a way."

2. She Thinks VA Has Mean Girls Potential

When we asked if she went into making VA with a Mean Girls mindset, she said, "No, I don’t think so. I mean I think the only thing that reflects that is Mark Waters has an amazing sense of humor and he really knows how to capture that. He knows beats, and he gets that, and he’s smart about that. So in that sense it really translates, and is very similar. Other than that, it just, you know, it’s a very different movie. But Mark Waters is great with humor, so that is definitely similar.

3. She Doesn't Let Pressure Get to her

Zoey was named one of Yahoo!'s breakout stars for 2014, and we asked if that makes her feel any pressure. Her response? "No, it’s so cool! I don’t know! It’s really cool. I don’t [pause]. Yeah it’s really cool. I don’t really think that much about it. It is what it is. I think the more you kind of like process that kind of stuff it might make you crazy or make you there’s pressure on you or whatever. But I don’t really think about that I guess."

4. She LOVES the VA Fandom…

She even gave a little shout out to some of her fave VA fansites on Twitter! "I have like a whole list called Awesome Possum because there’s just so many, there’s one called Dhampir Life, which has a lot of awesome stuff. There’s Vampire Academy News…Zoey Deutch News, Vampire Academy Belgium. I don’t know, they’re the funniest names ever, I love it so much. So much passion."

Know Your Vampires

With the books being based on Russian vampire myths, there is some unique terminology. For those not familiar with the novels, here is a quick breakdown of things you need to know. Rose is dhampir, a half human-half vampire. Dhampir are born from humans and Moroi and can only reproduce with Moroi. Dhampir are the guardians of the Moroi. Rose is the guardian of Lissa, a Moroi Princess.
The Moroi are vampires that are born and mortal. Moroi are peaceful by nature, and while they can be in the sunlight, it is not always comfortable. The Moroi can use elemental magic (earth, fire, air, water, and spirit) as a defense but are not allowed to use it offensively, creating the need for the Dhampir to protect them. Unlike typical vampires, Moroi are capable of living off of human food as well as blood.
The Strigoi are the big bads of the Vampire Academy world. They are vampires that are made, not born. Moroi, humans and Dahampir can all be made or turned into Strigoi. The Strigoi take on cruel, vindictive personalities and are considered undead. They are pale and very sensitive to sunlight. They can feed off of anyone but prefer Moroi blood because that is what gives them power. Essentially Strigoi are the vampires from all the scary stories.

''Can Vampire Academy Make Vampires Cool Again?''

Although we’ve seriously moved on from all things vampire, we think Vampire Academy might be able to make them cool again. In recent years, zombies, witches, and werewolves have surpassed vampires in the high school hierarchy, but that could all change when Vampire Academy hits theaters on Feb. 14.

Vampire Academy is based on the widely popular book series by Richelle Mead that first came out in 2007. The film adaptation combines two heavy-hitters in teen Hollywood movies. It’s directed by Mark Waters, who also brought us Mean Girls, while the script was co-written by Daniel Waters, who wrote the cult-classic Heathers (which some have described as the ‘80s version of Mean Girls.) With such great people on board, how could Vampire Academy not be a hit?

After watching the trailer, fans of the series will notice that many of the best scenes from the book have made it into the film — it seems very little has been changed in the adapting process. An exclusive clip released by MTV gave us a longer look at one of those scenes. The fast paced dialogue is on par with many of the best teen dramas and the characterization of the main players seems to be spot on.

From what we can tell, Vampire Academy doesn’t just look like a really cool vampire movie — although it does, even though we hate ourselves for saying it — it looks like it’s going to be a really cool teen movie. (We’re not saying it’s as good as Mean Girls and Heathers just yet, but it could be.)

ON SCHOOL: IT’S EMBARASSING
“My middle school experience? I have no words. High school isn’t that bad…middle school is mortifying.

ON BEAUTY: EMBRACE THE BASICS
“I think the greatest makeup inventions of all time are mascara and lip balm…those are the best.”

ON MEAN GIRLS: BE NICE
“Kill ‘em with kindness—honestly, I really listen to this. It makes people check in. They’ll think, “Why was she so nice to me, why am I doing this to her?”

ON SKIN CARE: KEEP IT CLEAN
“I’m very specific about removing makeup. Take care of your face!”

 ON DATING: BE YOURSELF
“Don’t let people change you. That’s not right. In relationships, trying to change one another is never worth it.”

 ON TRENDS: STAY COMFY
"Dress how you want to dress…trends are going to go out of style, and then you'll look back and be like, 'What was I wearing?' Wear whatever you feel comfortable with because that's a constant."

Fangirlish Goes Behind The Scenes Of Vampire Academy With Richelle Mead

''It was revealed last week that Richelle Mead has a cameo in Vampire Academy. As you can tell by the picture above – she’s a teacher at St. Vlad’s.
We were on set with Hypable and Page to Premiere when she filmed her cameo. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, we can tell you what she had to say about her cameo…''~ Fangirlish

Q: We saw you got to play a little cameo earlier. How was that? What was the story behind that?

Richelle: It was Marks suggestion. I just did a walk through. I was a teacher walking through the halls, just before some action. It was fun. You know, it was nothing. It was a walk on for me and there was still so much work that goes into that. They take take after take, after take… and they do every angle.
Q: You are worn out by the end of it.

Richelle: And I think how are they doing it. They aren’t just walking, they are talking and they are doing this for… I mean this was a six day work week and they are going all night and it blows my mind. The amount of time to get one minute of footage. That’s five hours of filming. It’s crazy.

Q: It’s not the start of a new career as an actor.

Richelle: No. I am going to go home and go back to my writing.

Q: You aren’t the new Stan Lee or something. Write a little bit, film a cameo…

Richelle: Oh that’s right. If they can find roles creative for me as they have found for Stan we will see.
