3 friendship secrets from the stars of vampire academy
Looking for a flick that you can really sink your teeth into this weekend? Grab your BFF and go see Vampire Academy (out Friday!). If you're not familiar with the series the movie was based on, the story is about Lissa (Lucy Fry) and her BFF Rose (Zoey Deutch) and their adventures at Vampire Academy (think: Hogwarts for vampires). Despite their differences, the girls have a super-tight bond, which helps them survive bullies, evil vampires, and even three species of boys, and makes this book-turned-movie the ultimate friendship flick.
We caught up with the cast of Vampire Academy and asked them to spill their real-life friendship secrets for getting a bond like Lissa and Rose's.
1. Make Your Friendship A Priority. It’s easy to get super busy with homework, soccer practice, SATs, and you know, sleep, but it's still important to make time for your besties. “I know how hard it is to be in school and have a crush on a guy and all of a sudden you lose sight of what is more important,” Zoey explained. “[Rose and Lissa] prioritize one another and treat each other the same way I treat my family. I really love and admire their loyalty.”
2. Lean On Each Other. Not only is Rose responsible for protecting Lissa from evil vampires, but she's also the one person Lisa, who lost her entire family, can truly count on. While Rose can see what Lissa's doing even when they're not together, Lucy Fry says you don't need super powers to get their share your deepest, darkest secrets kind of bond IRL. “You have to trust that you won’t be judged and try to open up about things you’re going through,” Lucy says. “Even if you haven’t accepted something yourself yet, by telling your friend, you can find new ways to heal and you’ll become closer.”
3. Ignore the Bullies. Rose and Lissa have to deal with a major bully named Mia, who totally terrorizes the girls when they get to the Academy. But Sami Gayle (who plays Mia) explains that even though she acts all mean and tough, Mia is actually super insecure about her social status, and sees Lissa and Rose as a threat. So what's Sami’s advice for dealing with a bully? “Use the support of your real friends and your family members to guide you and remember, we’re all just trying to find ourselves,” she said. “Channel your energy into good projects and activities. That’s how some of the best things come to be.”
